Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

We began our 75th Anniversary year by planning and planting Phase 2 of our Anniversary Forest (a Miyawaki planting) by collaborating with the Municipality of Leamington. We planted a large Redbud tree near the forest. We had a celebration of our anniversary in May 2025 and received recognition from all levels of local government and OHA. Refreshments were served and photos were taken.
We attended the June 2025 Mill Street Market where we distributed native plants and educated people about the importance of native plants and the dangers of invasives.
We had speakers who emphasized native plants for eco-system services, like supporting birds, and other speakers who promoted the growing of vegetables, micro-greens and hydroponics, etc.
We developed games and activities for our members and the public to increase knowledge of invasive and native plants.
We planted and maintained community gardens at Sun Parlour and Shotton Parkette.
We updated the memorial for deceased LHS members

Highlights

For our 75th Anniversary, we planted Phase 2 of a Miyawaki forest where over 1,000 bare-root and plug native trees and shrubs were planted. We involved 20 local high school students and a number of community volunteers for a total of 120 volunteer hours.
Our native plant sale was held on May 31, 2025. Our annual picnic was held June 18, 2025 where a $500 bursary was awarded to a local high school student.
Seven Fabulous Garden Awards were awarded in June, July and August 2025. Three Fabulous Fall Display Awards were awarded in October 2025.

Society/Club Volunteer HoursThe volunteer hours we spend illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a Society/Club, District, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural Society/Club members volunteered 445,387 hours in 2024!
