Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

The Town Beautification team completed the planting of the Native Plant Flower Bed around the "In memoriam" tree. Native plants were featured at both the Spring and Fall plant sales.

A new native plant project involving a seed library is planned for 2026.

The Society website is being revised to make it easier to navigate and hopefully attract new members.

Fundraisers

A case of bulbs was purchased for the OHA fundraiser, 15 bags at $35 each. These proved difficult to sell to our members, though we are not sure why.

We had our usual spring and fall plant sales, and were most gratified by the many donations of our members. Sales at the Fall plant sale were boosted by the donation of surplus plants from District 2.

A Silent Auction held at the AGM raised $342 for Lanark County Food Bank.

Highlights

The highlight of the year was hosting the District 2 Fall Advisory meeting in October. The OHA president, Vicky Culbert, was in attendance. Members baked muffins and other treats for attendees, who brought brown bag lunches. It was a beautiful fall day and the meeting was most enjoyable. The "take home' gift was a Blue-Stemmed Goldenrod grown from seed by our members.

Youth Club Report

The participants were students at Naismith Memorial Public School in the kindergarten classes. They are not registered members of the Horticultural Society and did not pay a fee. There were no competitions and no meetings were held. All activities took place at the school with the cooperation of the teachers.

Five volunteers planted vegetable and flower seeds (2 pots for each student) with 87 Kindergarten students. The seeds included pumpkin, cantaloupe, beet, cucumber, radish, basil, green beans, yellow beans, zinnias and marigolds. On July 11 and 18, the same volunteers worked with 30 Grade 4 students to weed the garden boxes, to re-vitalize a pollinator garden put in years before by the Field Naturalists, to add compost, to plant seedlings from the Kindergarten pots as well as to plant tomato, broccoli, cabbage and green pepper plants and bean, cucumber, radish and beet seeds.

Society/Club Volunteer HoursThe volunteer hours we spend illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a Society/Club, District, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural Society/Club members volunteered 445,387 hours in 2024!
