Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

We did a restoration of the Anniversary Garden at the Gaukel Memorial Arena in St. George which was completed a few days prior to the Communities in Bloom Competition in July in Brant County. The theme was edible gardens so our focus this year was to incorporated edible flowers as well as vegetables. Dragonfly Landscping helped with the lay out and supplies for the project. The planting of native plants will continue into 2026.

Fundraisers

The club had an annual plant sale in May at the St. George arena and a spring bulb sale at Applefest in September.
Many members volunteer for our fundraisers and the plant sale was a huge success.
The bulb sales in September were very slow this year and we ended up planting left over bulbs in the anniversary garden at the arena and a flower bed by the St. George Post office.
The club offers a $1000 scholarship to a high school student in the County of Brant entering post secondary studies in agriculture, horticulture, environmental studies or forestry but in 2025 we had no applicants.

Highlights

The club focused on soil this year. We learned about improving soil for food production with a presentation on regenerative farming. We had speakers that spoke on soil for mushroom growing, herbs and indoor plants. We had a trip to Berkelbloem Tulip Farm. Our major fundraiser was the plant sale and selling spring bulbs at Applefest. We had a pruning demonstration and two workshops with basic flower arranging. We did a restoration of the Anniversary Garden and participated in "Communities in Bloom" and the Adopt-a-Road garbage cleanup.

Youth Club Report

The group consisted of six, 6-9 year olds. The budget was $300 -expenses were $275. The leaders selected the projects.
The St. George Lawn bowling Club offered the facility for free for 2025.
There were 5 meetings on the second Tuesday of the month from May-September. On May 10th the members learned about edible flowers and made planters with nasturtium, borage and bachelor buttons. June the 10th there was a guest speaker teaching about seeds and the youth made a salad bowl planter of lettuces, carrots, radishes etc. On July 8th there was a guest speaker doing a presentation on pollinators and the student got to view the inside of a hive and pick out the queen bee. On August 12th the youth made their own flower press and from pressed flowers they made laminated book marks. On September 9th they learned how to make a basic round flower arrangement and showed their masterpieces at Applefest.

Youth Club Comments

This year we will try to expand to a larger age group if we have more youth leader volunteers. The summer months are difficult to have all members attend so we are going to try and have a youth club an hour before our member meetings.

Society/Club Volunteer HoursThe volunteer hours we spend illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a Society/Club, District, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural Society/Club members volunteered 445,387 hours in 2024!
