Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

The At-A-Glance Committee gets together in September to plan the program meetings for the coming year. Our program meetings begin in January and run every month excluding July in which we have a Garden Tour and August. We do not hold a program meeting in December but instead have a Christmas Potluck in which our members and their families get together for food, fun, and fellowship. Our program brochure is ready for distribution at the potluck and to the community. The monthly program meetings are very diverse. Our meeting in May takes place at the local greenhouses. This is the biggest meeting of the year with over seventy members attending. The owners and their work team share new garden trends, explore plant selections and learn expert tips like this year's topic, pruning fruit trees. We hold an annual plant sale in May that is our main fundraiser; and partner with local schools to teach about growing plants. Students plant for themselves and for the Plant Sale.

Fundraisers

We again had our annual plant sale. The sale occurs at the end of May right when gardeners are beginning to buy their plants for the season. Our Garden Tour in July was sold out again this year. The five gardens that were visited were very unique and diverse. Members and community always enjoy the tour. To prepare for the plant sale Horticultural members again went into the local schools to teach students about growing plants and to promote the junior garden competitions and the Fall Fair competitions. The students planted a variety of flowers, squash, and tomatoes to give toward the plant sale and to take some home for themselves. They cared for their plants in their classrooms until the seedlings were ready to take home and get picked up for the plant sale.

Highlights

Volunteers also met up at Princes Court and did the spring weeding and cleanup.Garden knockers were distributed throughout the Dryden and District area. The knockers recognize the work that people do in their yards to help beautify our community. Noteworthy programs included "Plant to Win", people learned all about what we need to know and do to have successful entries in the flowers, vegetable and canning divisions in the Fall Fair. "Maximizing Your Bounty" included information about a no waste/less waste way to utilize all of your produce.
