Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

With the Township of Woolwich Environmental Enhancement Committee (TWEEC), Woolwich Gardeners participated in an evening of workshops called "After The Harvest". This included tips for canning, freezing, storing, and vacuum sealing vegetables and fruit from your garden. There were also local food products to try for visitors. In the Spring, we had a "Gardening 101" event with TWEEC and had a table with our information (i.e. Memberships, Scholarship, Junior Gardeners).

Fundraisers

Our Plant Sale and Garden Tour were our two main fundraisers, which both resulted in higher turnout and similar or more funds raised than last year. Our Plant Sale is in conjunction with Township of Woolwich Environmental Enhancement Committee, who donate numerous varieties of Native Plants; information pamphlets are provided.
We continue to put out a collection bowl for "Free-will donations" for non-members who attend our Monthly speakers (Education Meetings). Regular members also donate when renewing their yearly membership, as we have this on the Google form as an option.

Highlights

Our monthly speakers were well attended (50 attendees and more), with refreshments served before, during and after. We have members sign up to bring baked goods and our Hospitality team provide fruit and cheese platters. Noteworthy speaking topics were Pruning for Plant Health and Beauty, Edible Plants (the presenter gave us his slide-deck to share afterwards), Ticked Off - Ticks, Fleas and Other Things in Your Yard, Growing Your Own Medicine, and Love of Lavender. Our Seasonal Demonstration was a big hit (we had a draw for 4 creations).

Youth Club Report

Youth ages 9 - 14 years old met each Wednesday evening starting at the end of May 2025 until end of August 2025. Each Junior Member had their own plot, but also had various shared plots (i.e. herb garden, thornless raspberry bushes, rhubarb). Activities included weeding, sewing seeds, watering, harvesting and some crafts. Juniors chose their favourite flower and plant to grow as well. A bin with a lock has been purchased to store items to be used each week. We also contacted the Woolwich Township Facilities Department and have been given permission to grow a pollinator garden beside the enclosed area that we use. The site of the Junior Garden is at Bristow Park, 5 First St. E., Elmira.

Youth Club Comments

Weeding is often a challenge, so our leaders this year encouraged weeding first, then watering (one of their favourite activities). This worked really well. Although we have a general age range, our leaders are flexible with this if someone wishes to have their younger brother or sister join at the same time. Having the Junior Gardener Club over at the end of the summer is helpful, since everyone is quite busy once school starts in September.

Society/Club Volunteer HoursThe volunteer hours we spend illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a Society/Club, District, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural Society/Club members volunteered 445,387 hours in 2024!
