Anniversary And/Or Other Special Events

We ran two full-scale in-person Flower Shows in June and September. We had about 300 entries in each show. We know of no other Society or District that has this kind of turnout at two shows! Next year's shows are in the planning. Once again, we received incredibly positive feedback from our members, other members of the community, and the Judges.
Our Horticultural Society Park, in conjunction with the Town’s Confederation Park/Sculpture Park, was part of the 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Adventure, an initiative of Leeds and Grenville Counties.
In June, the Society enjoyed having students from St Joseph’s School Environment Club. Three classes of students visited the Park with their teachers to learn about pollinators. Students had the chance to build a mini bee house to take home and were given seeds to grow and a list of good pollinators for their home gardens.
In July, we held an Outdoor Competition and a Garden Tour, and in November, a photography contest.

Fundraisers

The first fundraiser of the season, a Plant Sale in May, was a significant success. Residents and society members donated a large number of plants for sale, including flowers, shrubs, herbs and vegetables. Competitive prices were offered, and knowledgeable members provided friendly advice.

In July, we hosted our annual Garden Tour, showcasing seven beautiful private gardens and the commercial growing facility GreenReach Farms. Visitors from several Ontario towns, including Kingston, Ottawa, and Lansdowne, attended the tour. A record number of tickets were sold!

A Pruning Workshop was offered in October. Our own professional arborist, Ruurd van de Ven, led a hands-on pruning workshop.

With holidays approaching fast, a seasonal workshop was held at the end of November to teach how to make a festive door swag. All materials were provided, and our experienced members offered detailed instructions. The swags turned out beautifully, and the attendees had a good time.

Highlights

Our membership is 107. We have reached the highest number recorded in decades.

Monthly in-person meetings, two Provincial-level Flower Shows, a Garden Tour, a successful Plant Sale, and two fundraising workshops were well attended.
Our Board has been reaching out to our members and the community through educational outreach, community beautification, and gardening encouragement. A perfect example was the Seed and Book Library. We gave away over 1500 packages. By providing free seeds and advice, we encourage people to garden and grow food.

Society/Club Volunteer HoursThe volunteer hours we spend illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a Society/Club, District, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural Society/Club members volunteered 445,387 hours in 2024!
