Leaside Garden Society – Speaker Series presents:
Speaker: Joanna Blanchard
Topic: Leaside: A Garden City
Date: Thursday October 12th, 2023
Time & Place: Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting starts sharp at 7:00 p.m at Leaside Library (165 McRae)
We often think of Leaside as leafy and green, with its mature trees and carefully tended gardens. So, surely, it must have been designed as a ‘Garden City’? Sadly, that was not the case, and indeed the original plan had little or no public green space. This talk will look at the history and philosophy of Garden Cities and will also focus on the development of Leaside, its green spaces and its gardens. We’ll also think about how greening our community benefits us all, and perhaps speculate a little about how we can work together to encourage the preservation of gardens in Leaside.
Speaker Bio:
Joanna has lived in Leaside for over 35 years, has been a member of the Leaside Garden Society for about 20 years, and has been president and co-president of the Society for several terms.
She was raised in a ‘botanical family’ and as a child she absorbed botanical information without really realising it. As soon as she had her own living space plants began to creep in – first houseplants, then a window box on the apartment balcony, and then when she had a real garden there seemed no limit! Over the years she has accumulated a library of ‘plant books’ and has qualified as a Master Gardener.
This talk combines Joanna’s interest in the living world and horticulture with her interest in and concern for our local Leaside environment.
