for year just ended

17/04/2021

The District AGM was held using Zoom, something the Director had to learn how to use. It was very successful, well attended, enjoyed by those attending. The host Society went to great lengths to create interesting slide shows for the flower show and to highlight gardens that they look after as well as member's gardens. The speaker , Ingrid Janssen, was very informative, and spoke on “Gardening in the Age of Coronavirus: Finding Solace in Uncertain Times".

Society AGMs were attended by either the District Director or an Assistant Director. This allowed two new Assistant Directors to learn more about other Societies. Almost all of these meetings were held online. One was an in-person meeting.

District 5 Societies were creative in increasing members by partnering with community partners and reaching out via community events such as Farmer’s Markets, working with the local library etc.
The District met with Societies in October to provide an OHA update.

Communications with the Societies continued by email throughout the year to keep us all connected. These emails often resulted in Societies initiating good discussions with all to help with planning etc. They also shared information on activities so that they could add on to their programming or streamline their practices.

The District meeting with presidents was replaced by an email communication in February. An online meeting with District 5 Societies was held in October to update Societies on OHA and OMAFRA information. Our presidents are very engaged and support each other and share a great deal of information with each other.
The District Director answered many questions from Society presidents over the year.
The District Executive met on-line as well.

Grants from the District were not offered in 2021, or 2020 as many public plantings were not possible. In addition, the youth components of many societies were not possible.

Do to the pandemic, outreach programs that District 5 participates in to promote OHA and horticultural societies were cancelled. These included Canada Blooms, and Get the Jump on Spring and Seedy Saturday at Toronto Botanical Garden.
District 5 also helps set up the OHA display at the CNE, but that was also cancelled.
Meetings for Societies were held online, as were all District Executive meetings, and meetings with the Societies.

Volunteer hours illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a society, district, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural society members volunteered over 517,000 hours in 2017!
