Stouffville Horticultural Society

District 5

About Us

For the past century, the Stouffville Horticultural Society has been a mainstay for the residents of Stouffville and the surrounding area.  The Society was organized in April 1924 under the authority of the provincial Ministry of Agriculture. With a focus on both horticulture and gardening, the membership in early years included many farmers as well as gardeners. Gradually, interest shifted to gardening. In the 1960s and 1970s women entered the full-time workforce in greater numbers, often in jobs far from Stouffville, leaving little time to spend on the upkeep of large gardens. The focus of the Society again changed to reflect that reality.

Our mission is to educate our members and the general public, adults and children, about the benefits of maintaining native habitats by planting native trees, shrubs, perennial grasses, and flowers, while avoiding invasive plant species. We aim to encourage plantings that will attract and sustain our native and beneficial pollinators, and also to create sustainable and time-saving gardens that beautify our community.

Each month (excluding August) from March to November, on the third Monday, we invite experts to speak on topics of interest to our members. We also offer flower show and design competitions, a photography competition, a plant sale, various how-to workshops, and occasional bus trips to visit gardens around southern Ontario. Our Happy Place program (currently on hiatus) recognizes beautiful front gardens of any size in the community.

In 2017, in cooperation with the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, the Society planted the Canada 150 Garden at the corner of Park Drive and Booth Drive. In 2024, we are working to ensure the continued existence of the now-mature Canada 150 Garden; further details are included in our petition https://www.change.org/p/nix-the-tank-save-the-canada-150-garden

We invite you to join us and become a member of Stouffville Horticultural Society in our centennial year.
