The majority of D16 Societies and Garden Clubs held regular monthly meetings with a range of speakers over ZOOM, however, 1/3 of the D16 Societies, because of the age of their membership or issues with internet connectivity did not participate in ZOOM meetings or hold any meetings in 2021.

The ZOOM meeting schedule of speakers was shared among all D16 Societies, with the District paying for a ZOOM account which was open to all. Members for all societies were encouraged to ZOOM into other Society's meetings to hear speakers.

In general, most Societies and Clubs held their AGM's either by ZOOM or outdoors weather permitting or in one case Bond Head, in-person inside, before the OMICRON variant took hold. In all cases where there was an in-person meeting, masking and social distancing was in effect.

Several Societies held successful plant sales, either online or in-person with appropriate COVID 19 protocols in place

COVID 19 restrictions continued to dominate and restrict all aspects of the Society'ss' programming, particularly revenue generating events such as Plant Sales. Many of the Societies did manage to undertake some limited outdoor community activities including community garden work, work in Arboretums and municipal garden work.

The greatest impact to all Societies, particularly with older members, was the social isolation and inability to meet in-person. This has resulted in a number of Societies needing to rebuild over the next few years

Volunteer hours illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a society, district, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural society members volunteered over 517,000 hours in 2017!
