District 8 societies continued to be adaptive to Pandemic challenges. District 8 held both Spring and Fall Board meetings and AGM in virtual format, with great participation from the respective societies. Our societies throughout the District continued to keep their communities in bloom, as well as hosting virtual meetings, as well as working with their respective municipalities and membership to support plant sales, and promote horticulture in our District.
For a few of our societies, they were challenged with virtual format as a barrier, noting that some societies had planned events cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions. Society numbers are lower than pre Covid for some societies. Certainly from an Executive perspective, we held two virtual executive meetings and were able to go forward to have in person Executive meetings in the Fall of 2021. District Service Award was presented to Elaine Shantz of Ripley in person in October of 2021.
Volunteer hours illustrates how valuable we are in our communities and across Ontario. As an analytical tool, volunteer hours can also be used to determine where time is being spent within a society, district, or organization which helps us make important decisions on programs, fundraising, and budget. For instance, horticultural society members volunteered over 517,000 hours in 2017!
