Port Hope Garden Club
Message from the 2019 President: Carole Elliott
During the past year our club has been busy with new and continuing projects. We increased our promotion by producing and posting more posters to heighten our visibility in the community and holding a garage sale and membership promotion event in conjunction with the town’s annual Arts and Crafts festival in Memorial Park to attract additional attention. Our membership grew to 62 from 50.
Members appreciate our new newsletter Kaleidoscope containing Club activities as well as information about events of interest in the area.
We expanded our Pollinator Patch in Garden Hill and added a specially designed bee hotel. The municipality asked us to increase the number of winter baskets we design and arrange annually from four on Walton Street to an additional four on Ontario Street and three in Lent’s Lane – up to 11.
For our turn hosting the four-garden tour in our area, we featured seven gardens which were enjoyed by over 60 people although it was one of the few days it rained this summer. Our interesting A Day in the Country bus tour was thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees, on another rainy day.
Members of our board and those who volunteer enjoy the activities. Yet, recruiting others to serve on the board of directors continues to be a challenge. We face the coming year without a secretary or vice-president. We would like to reintroduce a bursary program but have decided not to proceed until we have a volunteer to coordinate the project. We hope
that some of our new members will want to become directors. In the meantime, we are working effectively as a team.
During 2019, we will continue our existing activities such as the plant sale in May; a bus tour in July; the yard sale/membership promotion event in August and the winter bridge baskets. As we are looking at ways we can further beautify Port Hope, let us have your suggestions. As always, we welcome members’ suggestions for activities to enhance our Club.
