Dorchester Horticultural Society

District 10

About Us

The Dorchester Horticultural Society began in November of 1994 when local resident Marlene Colquhoun invited others to gather and discuss forming a gardening and horticultural club. Twenty-eight people attended that first meeting. The society has been operating under the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAFRA) guidelines for a Horticultural Society since that first meeting and officially became a member in 1996.
Over the years we have achieved many goals and hosted numerous special events on top of our monthly meetings. We have planted a variety of trees and shrubs throughout our community and yearly provide wonderful displays of flowers at the cenotaph, seniors center and the welcome signs at the entrances to the village. For a few years we actively participated in the Communities in Bloom initiative and we showed very well for a small village achieving 3 blooms out of 4 and an honorable mention in 2001.
We regularly host interesting bus trips; most recently we have visited the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Dundurn Castle in Hamilton and the Whistling Gardens in Wilsonville. It is also always fun to include social events into our calendar and they have included garden tea parties, strawberry socials, wine and cheese get-togethers and garden tours.

"Our goals are to encourage the love of gardening through education and fellowship, to enhance civic beauty by means of responsible plantings, to develop an interest and understanding of horticulture among our youth through a dedicated children’s program and to promote the protection of native environments following the initiative of conservation groups and authorities."

General Information:

Hello fellow gardeners!
If you have an interest in flowers, vegetables, trees, pollinators, birds and water features come join us! Our society gets together every third Tuesday of the month; except July and August; to meet with other garden enthusiasts, listen to informative speakers and enjoy learning more about improving our skills and our ‘green thumbs’. Whether you are a novice or a master gardener, there is always much to learn, share and put into practice. Doors open at 6:45 pm, meeting begins at 7:00 pm
We also offer a very fun program tailored to children from 7-13 years. Our leaders introduce and explore the wonders of sowing, nurturing and harvesting as well as organizing interesting activities and crafts. The season is highlighted with submissions to the Dorchester Fall Fair.
