Bracebridge Horticultural Society

District 18

About Us

We celebrate our 87th Anniversary in May 2019. Speakers at each general meeting have topics ranging from Adopt-a-Pond to home grown teas to building garden structures. Workshops this year include making hypertufa pots with more to come. Our society has looked after 7 gardens around Bracebridge for numerous years. We are now looking after only 4 public gardens and our own Millennium Garden as we are aging gracefully but moving a little slower. Our float in the Bracebridge 'Disney' Santa Claus Parade was one of the best; without any prejudice :). Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs braved the cold and rain with smiles, and our two clowns gave out candy to all the budding gardeners.
We give a thousand dollar bursary to eligible post secondary students as well as a one hundred dollar grant to each elementary or high school in Bracebridge that applies. We plan our first ever Seedy Saturday focusing on identification & saving seeds- working with the local Library and Muskoka Conservancy.
The world has changed in the last 87 years and we must change with it. To that end we are looking at Social Media and changing lifestyles where leisure time is limited. Our idea of horticulture includes flowers, trees and shrubs but also how and where to grow vegetables and herbs. We are looking at every aspect of what is involved with growing, from soil microbes to weather and climate change.
