SUMMARY:March General Meeting: Guest Speaker Dave McCulloch\, "Live Well\, Garden Better"
DESCRIPTION:As we age\, we often see decreasing physical ability (e.g.\, lifting and balancing) which can reduce and restrict our ability to carry out certain gardening activities. An older gardener might ask\, “When did the decline begin?” A younger gardener might ask\, “Is the decline inevitable?” And\, as our winter slumber ends\, most gardeners should be asking\, “How can I physically prepare for all the tasks of the gardening season?” Dave will answer these questions while discussing prevention and risk reduction strategies\, so we can live well\, garden better\, and garden longer\, by preventing the preventable and risk managing the rest. \nRichmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society member David McCulloch is a certified personal trainer and an avid gardener. Following 34 years as a meteorologist\, he became a personal trainer in 2013 to help others reach their health and fitness goals and to compliment his skills as a karate instructor. He quickly focused on working with the 50+ demographic and began specializing in working with populations such as those with low back pain\, arthritis\, and osteoporosis. Dave and his wife\, Heather Auld\, also a meteorologist\, focus their gardening efforts on adding native species and implementing weather and climate smart gardening practices. Their garden is considered a popular\, “must visit” stop on local Garden Tours. \nTonight’s guest speaker is a resident of Richmond Hill and will be participating in-person. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. Instructions are also available by logging into our site and checking the “members-only” version of this event. \nVisitors: Guests are welcome to participate in this virtual and in-person event at a nominal fee of $5.00. SUMMARY:September General Meeting: Guest Speaker Claudette Sims\, "A Gardening Conundrum
DESCRIPTION:September General Meeting: Guest Speaker Claudette Sims\, “A Gardening Conundrum: Why are Invasive Plants Sold in Nurseries?”\nInvasive plants are considered by many to be a threat to biodiversity\, human health\, and our economy. And\, they threaten native plants\, insects\, animals\, and our forests. So why are they sold in nurseries? Tonight’s speaker says that the Master Gardeners of Ontario receive so many questions on this subject that they decided to investigate. After months of research\, Claudette Sims has some surprising answers to share with us. But more importantly\, she has suggestions for moving forward. \nClaudette Sims joined the Master Gardeners of Ontario in 2004 and served as President for six years. She was a regular panelist and lead on the weekly CBC radio online garden chat for many years and also subbed in for Ed Lawrence on the radio\, which she says was a thrilling but scary experience. Claudette is currently Administrator for the very successful Master Gardeners of Ontario Facebook Group which is nearing 58\,000 members\, featuring a great team of Master Gardeners who provide gardening advice for the public.  Along with Cathy Kavassalis\, Claudette is working to further the work of the Canadian Coalition for Invasive Plant Regulation (CCIPR) to stop the sale of high-risk invasive plants that harm biodiversity. Claudette’s most recent passion continues to be adding larval host plants for butterflies and specific native plants for specialist bees.   \nTonight’s guest speaker is planning to attend the meeting remotely\, via Zoom.  A live video broadcast of her remote participation will be projected onto a large screen in the auditorium. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:August General Meeting: "Preserving the Harvest" with Karen Hollingshead
DESCRIPTION:Late summer is a great time to learn how to preserve the bounty produced from our gardens. Tonight’s speaker\, Karen Hollingshead\, will cover techniques such as dehydrating\, freezing\, preserving and canning; and will share some recipes that can be applied to our own harvested edibles. \nIf you were ever to experience a food shortage\, Karen Hollingshead would be the perfect next door neighbor. With the help of her dehydrator\, steam juicer\, canners\, freeze dryer and vacuum sealer\, her densely planted 800-square-foot garden feeds not only herself and her husband Steve\, but also both sets of parents.\nKaren’s fascination with gardening and preserving was sparked by childhood visits to her Danish grandparents’ home in North Toronto where she enthusiastically helped with all of the annual preserving rituals. A past-president of the Bolton and District Horticultural Society\, Karen is passionate about sharing the many valuable skill-sets of self-reliance that are quickly being forgotten. For more homesteading hints\, Karen invites you to follow her on Instagram @hilltop.hygge.homestead.   \nTonight’s guest speaker is planning to attend the meeting in-person. Should inclement weather prevent her from traveling to Richmond Hill\, a live video broadcast of her remote participation will be projected onto a large screen in the auditorium. \nSecond Flower Show of 2025 \nIn-person meeting attendees are invited to enjoy the Summer and Rose Flower Show following tonight’s guest speaker presentation.\nPlease consider exhibiting specimens from your own garden (More info.). SUMMARY:July General Meeting: Weather & Climate Smart Gardening with Heather Auld
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s speaker\, Heather Auld\, asserts that gardeners and farmers are optimists\, as they plant and tend their land\, hoping for the right temperatures at the right time\, sufficient rainfall\, less destructive storms\, manageable pests\, good soil\, and some luck to give a successful\, beautiful\, and healthy garden or high crop yields. Unfortunately\, while the soil can be locally amended\, the weather and climate elements and their impacts are less flexible. Adding to risks\, climate change and a growing number and intensity of extreme weather events are predicted to continue to increase challenges for gardeners.\nThat said\, there are practices available that can help to reduce the weather and climate risks for gardens\, homes and communities. There also are some potential opportunities to add new species in the garden\, as well as gardening strategies to help reduce the greenhouse gases that are feeding climate change. This presentation will highlight the changing extreme weather events in our region and some weather and climate-smart practices to reduce the risks\, including other “win-win” sustainable gardening strategies to support biological diversity\, pollinators\, and protect the environment for the next generations. \nHeather Auld is a meteorologist\, climatologist and an avid Richmond Hill gardener. Her professional career spans more than 45 years and three retirements. This includes 32 years as a Federal Government weather forecaster and climatologist in Toronto\, Vancouver\, Edmonton\, Canadian Forces Trenton and for NORAD\, and more than 13 years in the private sector as a consultant. She has developed extreme weather and climate design values for the National Building Code of Canada and other infrastructure standards\, has led the development of extreme weather guidance for municipal emergency management across Canada and provided expert testimony to many provincial and national disaster investigations. Heather has been invited to serve on various international expert teams and delegations\, including the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, World Meteorological Organization\, U.N. Strategy for Disaster Reduction; and she has served on various Canadian delegations to the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity.\nHeather and her husband\, Dave McCulloch\, also a meteorologist\, endeavor to implement weather and climate smart gardening practices in their garden\, considered a popular\, “must visit” stop on local Garden Tours.   \nTonight’s guest speaker is a resident of Richmond Hill and will be participating in-person. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:February General Meeting - Guest Speaker Chris Kingdon
DESCRIPTION:February General Meeting: Guest Speaker Chris Kingdon\, “Problem Solving: How a Wildlife Garden Evolves”\nIf you have a garden\, you likely have a ‘problem area’. Perhaps it’s ‘too wet’\, constantly flooding in the spring thaw or after a heavy summer storm. Or perhaps it’s ‘too dry’\, with the soil turning to cracked concrete by July. Perhaps you have a steep hill or large tree roots that make mowing the lawn impossible. Or perhaps you dream of beautiful flowerbeds but are overrun by hungry rabbits\, toads\, or other wildlife that keep destroying your hard work. For the Kingdons\, it was ‘all of the above’. But what if rather than problems these were opportunities? A chance to work with nature rather than against it – to create a Wildlife Garden. Tonight’s presentation will recap the five-year journey of Chris and Ona Kingdon’s Certified Wildlife Habitat garden: from a blank lawn to the lush tapestry of colour and life it is today\, and outline the many garden ‘problems’ they faced that led to great garden opportunities. \nAfter working at Reptilia Zoo for 4 years and Toronto Wildlife Centre for another 3\, Chris Kingdon observed\, first-hand\, the struggles wildlife face within the GTA. With a degree from the University of Guelph in Wildlife Biology & Conservation\, and travels to the high arctic\, the deserts of the southwest\, the rainforests of Ecuador\, and across the UK\, Chris identified habitat as a key thread for wildlife everywhere; particularly the importance of habitat to biodiversity\, and alarming destruction and fragmentation due to human sprawl. And so he began to dream of an interconnected network of wildlife gardens across southern Ontario to provide safe passage and sanctuary for all the wonderful creatures that call this land their home. Gardens that blend habitat with traditional garden design ideas resulting in creation of beautiful spaces for humans and wildlife to co-exist and bloom together. \n \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:November General Meeting: Guest Speaker Jennifer Doubt
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Jennifer Doubt\, “Conquering Moss-trophobia: A Supervised Encounter with Mosses and Some of their Closest Cousins”\nIn the plant world\, mosses are “strong\, sensitive” types. They cover enormous areas\, and are tough enough to grow without soil or roots\, or to survive long droughts and winters (heck\, even glaciation!). They’re also individually tiny\, and delicate enough to signal early warnings of environmental change. In the urban and natural spaces we know and love\, mosses make themselves at home on soil\, wood\, rock and a huge array of human-made stand-ins. They do this whether or not we notice them or invite them. Demystifying mosses can help gardeners with questions such as:\n– How can I tell if something is a moss\, or if it’s a lichen or something else?\n– How do the needs and ways of mosses differ from those of other plants?\n– What main types of moss grow in my plant pots\, yard or region?\n– Are they a problem? \nPlease bring your questions\, and come face-to-face with some of the most fascinating plants on the planet. \nJennifer Doubt\, originally from Deep River\, Ontario\, is a botanist with the Canadian Museum of Nature. Along with the other fun\, dedicated staff\, students and volunteers that make up the Canadian Museum of Nature Botany team\, she cares for a busy\, growing archive of over one million preserved plants and lichens\, and shares the collection far and wide for research and education. Every botanist obsesses more about some plants than others\, and for Jennifer it’s all about the bryophytes\, which she has documented and studied in the wild for over 25 years so far. And still\, there is so much to learn! \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:October General Meeting - Guest Speaker Marion Jarvie
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Marion Jarvie\, “Hellebores – Four Seasons of Beauty”\nHellebores go a long way toward shortening the winters of avid gardeners and providing year-round appeal! Marion will cover all aspects of growing Hellebores in this very thorough and informative talk. This spring beauty will start your gardening year off with flowers as early as February\, and will offer a dramatic framework for your early spring bulbs. Although almost always touted at nurseries as a plant for early spring\, this very long bloomer with gorgeous foliage offers a foil for other plants in summer and fall as well. Hellebores\, with their remarkable range of flower colours and foliage\, are intriguing show stoppers–tough beauties that take on spring frosts and winter chill with aplomb\, and blend readily with almost any garden plant\, especially ones that enjoy some shade. \nMarion Jarvie is a passionate plantswoman who has been gardening in Thornhill for more than forty years. Several weekends annually\, she opens her beautiful garden to the public to showcase plants in spring\, summer and autumn. An enthusiastic educator\, Marion teaches courses on gardening subjects at the Toronto Botanical Garden\, and she has lectured all over North America and the United Kingdom. For more information about Marion\, including the dates that her garden will be open in 2024\, visit www.MarionJarvie.ca. This is Marion’s thirteenth presentation to our society since her first in 1978. \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING: GUEST SPEAKER JEFF MASON
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING: GUEST SPEAKER JEFF MASON\, “30 YEARS ON A SAND DUNE”\nJeff will ask us to imagine the excitement of moving to the property that will become a dream garden\, putting that first shovel in the ground\, and discovering that you have just moved on to a 2-acre sand pile! His presentation explores the trials and tribulations\, successes and failures of creating a great garden on dry sand. From the un-watered Xeric garden to the increasing amounts of dry shade\, a vast array of perennials\, shrubs\, and annuals have been successfully cultivated under these tough conditions. In a talk that is part biographical\, part technical\, and part inspirational\, Jeff will share techniques for site preparation\, plant selection\, as well as “right plant\, right place” planting schemes. \nJeff is the owner of Mason House Gardens\, a specialty plant nursery growing uncommon perennials\, specialty annuals\, heirloom vegetables\, and tropical plants for containers and houseplants. He has dedicated his life to the cultivation\, production and promotion of plants and gardens through lecturing to garden clubs\, horticultural societies\, and master gardener groups\, teaching at George Brown College\, hosting a community access garden tv show and co-hosting “Let’s Get Growing” a live call-in radio show. SUMMARY:June General Meeting - Guest Speaker Cathy Kavassalis
DESCRIPTION:JUNE GENERAL MEETING: GUEST SPEAKER CATHY KAVASSALIS\, “TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPES IN A CHANGING CLIMATE”\nFrom where in the world do your plants originate? What are the impacts of your plant choices? By introducing non-native plants to the land in our care\, we are changing biological diversity near and far. Escaped garden plants can cause great harm\, disrupting food webs and ecosystems. As our climate warms\, the problems associated with invasive plants\, pests\, and diseases will increase. Tonight’s speaker invites us to come and learn how we can make better choices in our gardens to safeguard nature.  Get inspired as we explore how we can create beautiful\, environmentally sustainable spaces that meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. \nCathy Kavassalis is a passionate gardener and conservationist. A scientist\, educator\, and inspirational speaker\, Cathy endeavors to stimulate interest and awe in the living world.
