(Parking on Robinson St.) \nTopic: Practical Espalier Pruning for Trees and Vines \n\n\nThis presentation will explain how to prune trees or vines into an espalier\, a decorative way to prune trees flat against the wall in interesting patterns that also encourage flowering and fruiting. It is all based on how trees respond to heading cuts.  This type of pruning is especially successful for fruit trees and wisteria vines.

The email address provided for the ZOOM call should be the same as noted in the e-transfer comments so we know who you are.  \nTopic: Related to Native Plants\, to be determined \nWe welcome Lorraine Johnson\, a writer\, editor\, community gardening advocate and an activist for legalizing urban hens. When pressed to describe what unifies her work\, Lorraine has settled on the term cultivation activist. She is a frequent speaker on a myriad of topics related to gardening\, nature\, and environmental and social issues. Lorraine has been an OHS guest speaker in the past. \nThe author of numerous books on growing native plants\, gardening for pollinators\, restoring habitat\, and producing food in cities\, Lorraine’s work focuses on people and communities growing plants\, ecological health\, and the connection to nature and to each other.\nThrough her books\, articles and community projects\, she strives to advance the understanding that everything and everyone is connected and that\, through our actions\, we all have a role to play in making this world a better place for all life. \nThe founding editor of the magazine Ground: Landscape Architect Quarterly\, and also the Canadian editor of the DK books: Garden Plants and Flowers\, Canadian Gardener’s Guide\, and What Plant Where Encyclopedia. Her most recent book is A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumble Bee: Creating Habitat for Native Pollinators\, co-authored with Dr. Sheila Colla and published in 2022. \nLorraine is a patron of Toronto Botanical Garden; a former president of the North American Native Plant Society; former Board member of LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests); former Board member of Wild Ones! The author of over 10 books\, among\nthem are: Green Future: How to Make a World of Difference\, 100 Easy-to-Grow Native Plants for Canadian Gardens\, Grow Wild!\, The New Ontario Naturalized Garden\, Tending the Earth\, and The Real Dirt.

Complementing this\, horticultural therapy involves engaging individuals in purposeful plant-related activities\, fostering improved motor skills\, cognitive function\, and emotional well-being. Join us as we navigate through the therapeutic benefits of these practices\, examining real-world examples. \n\n\n\nGuinevere Kern is a passionate advocate\, educator\, and practitioner who strives to encourage curiosity\, find nourishment\, and build hope through the transformative power of horticulture.\n\n\nHer current roles include working at Homewood Health Center in the Horticultural Therapy Department\, teaching with Landscape Ontario’s GROW training program as a Horticulture Technical Instructor\, and advocating for the professional development of Horticultural Therapy as a viable therapeutic modality.\n\nHer horticulture background includes the University of Guelph in the Department of Plant Agriculture in native wildflower and ornamental plant research\, nursery\, landscape\, and greenhouse work in Canada\, and organic agriculture in the United States.\n\n\nShe is an active member of the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA)\, American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA)\, and sits on the CHTA Education Committee. Guinevere brings a transdisciplinary approach to health and wellness that invites us to cultivate the precious interconnected relationship between plants\, the broader environment\, ourselves and one another.
