DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend the Cannington Horticultural Society May Meeting featuring Paul LaPorte present “Invasive Species”. \nIn this presentation\, Paul will share his wealth of knowledge of native plant ecology and the devastating impacts that invasive species are having on our ecosystems. Come learn about the species that are invading our local area and how you can manage them on your property to benefit your garden and the natural environment. \nPaul is the owner of Ephemeral Ark Nursery (specializing in native woodland species) and consultant on ecological gardening and design. Living in the Greenbelt of the GTA\, he has taken the opportunity to steward and study numerous native plant communities within multiple ecotypes and varied microclimates. Paul maintains a strong knowledge of Ontario native plant species and their communities and fosters them in his own gardens. He is a member of the Ontario Biodiversity Council\, the current chair of the Ontario Native Plant Growers Association\, a past member of Kawartha Conservation’s BlueScape Steering Committee\, the past President of the North American Native Plant Society and the past Vice Chair of the Scugog Environmental Advisory Committee. He has had the pleasure of presenting for numerous organizations on the importance of native plants to our ecology. \n May Flower Show – Calling all members to bring in their garden treasurers. Entries to be in place by 7pm for judging. Check out the CHS 2025 Yearbook for all the classes and get ready for a bright and beautiful show season. Shop with ease knowing that nothing invasive will be on offer\, including unregulated invasive plants (like English Ivy\, Lily of the valley\, Daylily\, Periwinkle\, Goutweed\, etc.) that sadly can still be found at many garden centres. Speak up\, voice your concern! These pests are taking over Ontario’s woodlands. \n  \n***Jumping Worms?*** \nWe’ve got you covered! Whether you know about invasive jumping worms or not\, don’t fret when shopping our fair. All donated plants have been thoroughly root-washed\, repotted in clean pots with commercial potting soil\, and stored off the ground. Donated plants are collected two weeks prior to the sale to ensure viability after root-washing. It’s the third year that we are doing this. From vibrant flower beds to tranquil water features and meticulously manicured landscapes\, visitors will have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of gardening styles and inspirations.   \nAs an added treat\, homeowners will be present to share their experiences\, answer questions\, and provide gardening tips. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out\, the homeowners’ insights will ensure that you leave the tour with newfound knowledge and inspiration to transform your own green spaces. \nIncluded in the event will be guided tours at the pollinator garden nestled within the grounds of Southbrook Winery. Situated in the heart of Niagara’s wine country\, Southbrook Organic Vineyards was Canada’s first certified organic and biodynamic winery\, and has been using regenerative\, organic and biodynamic farming techniques for over 15 years. Visitors will get a rare glimpse into sustainable winemaking practices. During the guided tours\, guests can learn about the vital role of pollinators in the ecosystem while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding vineyards. \nIn addition to showcasing unique gardens\, the 2024 NOTL Horticultural Society Garden Tour will feature a special Bonsai show\, offering a distinctive view of the art of cultivating miniature trees. Bonsai\, an artful presentation in a potted plant\, conveys age and tranquility. Attendees can admire the intricate details of trees cultivated by Niagara Bonsai Society members\, marvel at the patience and skill involved in Bonsai gardening\, and gain insights into this ancient Chinese and Japanese art form. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to ‘feed your soil’ with compost! Balanced soil and biology are the key to natural sustainability. Presenters Nicole Brouwer and John Montague will explain the basics on organic compost and why it’s so important\, drawing from over 30 years of experience and the work done at The Glen Roads Organics. A leader in teaching and producing thermal compost\, organic regenerative farming practices and in building healthy\, resilient biologically diverse soils. \nNicole graduated from University of Toronto with Honours Bachelor of Science and a diploma from Durham College\, and is currently involved in regenerative agriculture practices and organic food production at The Glen Roads Organics. John is a Holistic Soil Consultant and dedicated to teaching people how to heal their soil. John studied with Dr. Elaine Ingham of The Soil Foodweb Inc. at Rodale Institute\, and the University of Guelph. As operations manager of The Glen Road Organics\, John takes pride in producing bio-diverse compost and potting mixes as well as teaching organic farming and gardening practices. \nAn excellent opportunity to learn about the importance of compost and how you may use this knowledge to improve your own gardens and farmland.
