SUMMARY:October CHS Meeting: "FOUR WINDS: Half a Century in the Making"
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for the October Meeting and presentation titled “Four Winds: Half a Century in the Making\,” by Rodger and Grace Inglis. \nGrace often says\, “It is probably true of most gardeners that their interest in plants goes back to childhood\, and often a parent or grandparent.” For Grace\, that inspiration came from her father. The Four Winds property was acquired in 1949 as a weekend escape from the city. Her father\, inspired by the dramatic setting of the 34-acre property\, envisioned a landscape garden. He shared his ideas with the family but passed away before he could act on them. \nGrace\, with an academic background in Fine Arts\, later earned a diploma in Landscape Architecture from the University of Toronto. Rodger recognized the potential of Four Winds for a landscape design project\, and together they began the planning and work\, each contributing their unique experiences and strengths. They rebuilt the house and barn\, added terraces descending the steep hill south of the barn\, and over time\, continued to expand the gardens. They incorporated vegetable and perennial gardens\, and planted many trees—over 900\, in fact! \nJoin us as Rodger and Grace explore and explain the remarkable transformation of Four Winds. This unique presentation offers a lifetime of gardening insights\, ideas\, and a wonderful journey through over a half-century of gardening. \nOctober Flower & Culinary Show – We invite all members to bring in their garden treasurers. Check the October Show & Meeting in the Yearbook (page 32) for complete listing of classes. Questions? Conact Show Chair Angela Hennessey email: angrichennessey@gmail.com \nDoors open at 6:30pm for placement of show entries \nPhotography Buffs  Club competitions are open to all CHS members who do not work as professional photographers. If you didn’t have the chance to enter the June competition\, we encourage you to look at the November print class details on page 33 of the Yearbook and start taking your photos! \nFall Special Registration – table open at 7pm. We are offering a Fall Special – sign up now and receive the rest of the 2025 season membership plus all of the 2026 season for just one price. Regular adults $20. Couple $30 and Youth $3.

SUMMARY:CHS September Meeting: ‘Hugelkultur Gardening & Sustainability’
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the September meeting. Join us as guest speaker\, Stephanie Smith explores the topic of ‘Hugelkultur Gardening & Sustainability’.  \nStephanie is an enthusiastic vegetable gardener with a unique approach. She grew up with a large\, traditional half-acre vegetable garden that provided much of her family’s food. For years\, she tried to replicate this style\, but the demands of family life with young children made traditional gardening (intense tilling\, bare soil) difficult. \nAbout five years ago\, a friend introduced her to hugelkulture and gardening with wood chips\, which completely transformed her gardening experience. She’s now a self-taught no-till gardener\, utilizing YouTube as a resource. Her greenhouse features hugelkulture beds\, and all her outdoor gardens are heavily mulched with wood chips\, with impressive results. \nStephanie’s background in biology has given her a deep understanding of building garden ecosystems and fostering biodiversity for optimal plant health. She often says\, “In truth\, I have a lot more fun watching all the creatures living in my greenhouse than eating the actual food I grow! Nature has spent billions of years fine-tuning the relationships between plants and animals\, so my philosophy is to work with nature and let it do what it is meant to do instead of relentlessly fighting against it.” \nWe invite you to join us and see what hugelkulture is all about! Presentation starts at 7:30pm. \nPlus: Youth Presentation – Summer Growing Challenge and Awards. 7pm Come early and catch the youth presentation – see what they have been doing in their gardens this summer and what has been growing! \nDoors open at 6:30pm for placement of Flower Show exhibits. Must be placed by 7pm. \nSeptember Flower & Vegetable Show – We invite all members to bring in their garden treasurers. Check the Septmeber Show & Meeting in the Yearbook (page 30-31) for complete listing of classes. Questions? Conact Show Chair Angela Hennessey email: angrichennessey@gmail.com \nDoors open at 6:30pm for placement of Flower Show entries

SUMMARY:CHS April Meeting: ‘Garden Seduction’ + ‘Intro to BioBlitz’
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: MEETING IS SET FOR TUESDAY APRIL 29\, DUE TO FEDERAL ELECTION ON MONDAY. \nCannington Horticultural Society warmly welcomes Ken Brown for our April Meeting. Ken has always been fascinated by green things that grow and this fascination led him to choose horticulture as his university field of study and down a long and interesting garden path that became his life. \nJoin us as Ken allows his passion for all things horticultural to flow out to his audience. His presentation “Garden Seduction” will include anecdotes\, facts\, a wealth of experience and a generous sprinkling of humour. Ken entices even the blackest of thumbs to want to go out into the garden and partake of all of its benefits and pleasures. Participation in things horticultural can have positive benefits in so many aspects of our lives and Ken enthusiastically identifies and demonstrates how we can all improve those lives by spending some time Dallying in the Dirt. \nCHS is excited to announce that author and scientist Richard Dickinson will be offering an “Intro to BioBlitz” session just before Ken’s main presentation. This is a great opportunity to learn about BioBlitz and how we can organize and hold one in our own community. Please consider arriving by 7pm to attend this informative session. \nApril Flower Show – first of the season! Calling all members to bring in their garden treasurers. SUMMARY:CHS April Meeting: ‘Fruit Trees: Pruning & Care’
DESCRIPTION:This meeting was rescheduled from March. Power outage in Cannington resulted in a postponement and we are pleased to offer the presentation on Monday April 14\, 2025. \nPlease join us in welcoming Rob Alexander the general manager at Nature’s Bounty Farm in Port Perry. Since 2018\, Rob has been responsible for growing and maintaining 24 acres of orchard which includes 25 varieties of apple and two different pear cultivars. The orchard consists of over 12\,000 trees\, ranging from recently planted high-density to 40-year-old semi-dwarf trees. Rob has traveled around the Great Lakes\, visited dozens of orchards\, and has learned best management practices from growers across Canada and the USA. With a background in marketing and public relations\, Rob has helped transform Nature’s Bounty into a leading agritourism destination in Durham Region. He is also an active volunteer in various agricultural organizations\, including Durham Farm Fresh and the Durham Federation of Agriculture. \nRob will bring his experience and knowledge working with fruit trees – as well as tools of the trade and samples of common diseases found on fruit trees. Join us and learn from Rob. With the recent damage resulting from the ice storm on our trees Rob will follow the presentation with a Q&A. \nDoors open at 7pm – Membership Registration Table open at 7pm. All welcome.
