SUMMARY:CHS April Meeting: Indigenously Infused Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Meet Robyn Ivory Pierson\, a proud Anishinaabe mother of three from the Curve Lake First Nation\, who has dedicated her life to promoting and sharing the beauty of Indigenous culture through her business\, Indigenously Infused. What began as a personal healing journey has evolved into a full-time career and lifelong learning experience. Robyn has incorporated her teaching degree to expand her offerings\, facilitating workshops that teach about the sacred medicines and contemporary methods of art with the medicines.
Robyn’s interest in traditional knowledge and the Anishinaabeg language led her to construct a greenhouse\, and create a medicine wheel garden – to learn how to grow her own medicines. Her passion for learning and teaching has also led her to become a professor at both Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough and Lindsay\, Ontario. \nMeet John McIntosh\, a passionate arborist\, and lover of nature. With a deep respect for the interconnections of science and indigenous knowledge\, he is committed to learning Anishinaabemowin and honoring the traditional stewards of the land and methods which have been used since time immemorial. Originally from Peterborough\, John has been a proud resident of Curve Lake for three years where he resides with his wife\, Robyn\, and their three children. John attended Fleming College in 2013\, where he studied Urban Forestry and gained valuable insights into his craft. Apart from his work as an arborist\, John is a proud father and skilled groundskeeper at Indigenously Infused. His background in gardening and greenhouse work has made him a well-rounded educator\, and he is passionate about sharing his knowledge with others. \nJoin the Cannington Horticultural Society on April 29 as both Robyn and John share their passion about Indigenous gardening. A unquie opportunity to learn from a traditional knowledge base – we invite you to come out learn\, grow & enjoy with CHS. Robyn and John will also bring along some of their own line of products from the Indigenously Infused Garden business – available for purchase. \nFirst Flower Show of the season! A fun way to showcase what is growing in your gardens! Open to all CHS Members– check your 2024 Yearbook for a full listing of classes\, including classes for the Youth Members! Get growing with CHS and have some fun displaying your spring garden gems. \nDoors open 6:30 pm for placement of Flower Show exhibits. All entries to be in place by 7pm sharp – judging to follow.

SUMMARY:May General Meeting - Guest Speaker Marion Jarvie - "Vertical Plants"
DESCRIPTION:MAY GENERAL MEETING: GUEST SPEAKER MARION JARVIE\, “VERTICAL PLANTS FOR DRAMA AND ARTISTIC LOOKS”\nVarying the height of woodies and perennials can provide key dramatic elements in the garden and enable the development of layers of plants. This design principle gives richness and depth to beds and borders\, essential elements in the evolution of a garden.\n\nThe focus of many gardeners is the twelve inches closest to the ground – the domain of ground covers and perennials.  Marion will encourage us to continue upward\, aiming for space in the realm of two feet and then three feet and then beyond the three feet provided by 90% of perennials and shrubs to develop a garden’s character\, richness\, and fullness. \nAdditionally\, vertical elements offer form and structure throughout the year\, including winter\, when they are especially valuable. \nMarion Jarvie is a passionate plantwoman who has been gardening in Thornhill for more than forty years. Several weekends annually\, she opens her beautiful garden to the public to showcase plants in spring\, summer\, and autumn. An enthusiastic educator\, Marion teaches courses on gardening subjects at the Toronto Botanical Garden\, and she has lectured all over North America and the United Kingdom. For more information about Marion\, including the dates that her garden will be open in 2024\, visit www.MarionJarvie.ca. This is Marion’s twelfth presentation to our society since her first in 1978. \nTonight’s guest speaker is planning to attend our meeting in person. \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. Instructions are also available by logging into our site and checking the “members-only” version of this event. \nVisitors: Guests are welcome to participate in this virtual and in-person event at a nominal fee of $5.00 Instructions for participation will be emailed to non-society members who complete the registration process before the event start time. Please visit our website at https://www.richmondhillgardensociety.org/event-5577787 to register \nAbout In-Person Attendance at the McConaghy Centre:  \n\nDoors to the auditorium open at 7 pm\nThe meeting begins promptly at 7:30 pm\nPlease bring a mug or cup if you would like hot coffee or tea\nAll attendees are encouraged to register online for inclusion in door prize draws\nMasks are not required but are encouraged\nIn-person attendees will be able to visit Flower Show entries

SUMMARY:Extending the Clematis Season
DESCRIPTION:Leaside Garden Society – Speaker Series presents: \nSpeaker: Dugald Cameron \nTopic: Extending the Clematis Season \nDate: Thursday May 9th\, 2024 \nTime & Place: 7pm In-Person at Leaside Library (165 McRae) – Guests Welcome \nI’m a gardener\, re-greener\, scientist and plant lover. Although I’ll try growing almost \nanything for fun my core interest is using gardens\, parks\, and other public spaces to re- \ngreen the ecology of where we live. I’m the author of “How to Make a Pollinator \nGarden”\, and practice what I preach\, having helped create many pollinator gardens in \nfront yards\, city parks\, and roadsides. \n  \nI have a particular interest in what it takes to make grassroots re-greening initiatives \nsuccessful. I was on the Advisory Board of the City of Toronto’s Pollinator Protection \nprogram\, and I do workshops with groups wanting to create green oases in their \nneighbourhoods. \n  \nI study insects – their behaviour\, their genetics\, and the “big-data” area called \ngenomics. Among the insects\, bees are a special focus. \n  \nI’ve been a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (honeybee \nprofessionals) and I received the Canadian Pollinator Advocate award for 2011 from the \nNorth American Pollinator Protection Campaign. I’m an adjunct professor at York \nUniversity and VP of the Horticultural Societies of Parkdale & Toronto. I helped found \nthe Parkdale society in 1987 and Project Swallowtail in 201 \nDugald Cameron has been a frequent speaker for LGS over the years.  He will be putting an emphasis on ways to extend the clematis season both by suggesting ones that bloom for longer periods of time as well as ones that you could plant that would compliment each other by  including spring\, summer and fall blooming times so that you have colour  throughout the season.\n\nAbout Dugald Cameron \nMy gardening career began at an early age in my English Grandmother’s garden where I’d occasionally help out with weeding & digging. I must have “caught the bug” then\, because I’ve been interested in plants and gardens ever since. My wife Lynn Pashleigh\, Father and I started Gardenimport\, a mail order nursery in 1983 because we couldn’t find the quality or selection of plants we wanted for our gardens. Offering a top quality selection of the latest seeds\, flower bulbs and plants to Canadian gardeners from a catalogue and website. After 32 years of business Gardenimport was closed in 2014. \nDugald was on the board of directors at The Toronto Botanical Garden for 13 years and continues to volunteer there\, teaching and writing for the Trellis magazine. He speaks on many subjects to Horticultural Societies in Southern Ontario and has sat in for Ed Lawrence on CBC’s Ontario Today and recently filled in for Paul Zammit on Later the Same Day. He was the founding president of the Greater Toronto Bulb Society and is a member of numerous horticultural societies. His diverse gardening interests include spring & summer flowering bulbs\, shrubs\, perennials and clematis.
