SUMMARY:Climate Change and Trees
DESCRIPTION:Leaside Garden Society Speaker Series \nHave you ever wondered how the tree canopy we in Leaside are so proud of is being affected by climate change? What the trees will look like in 20 years’ time? October’s talk will answer these questions\, and provide us with some tips about preparing for the inevitable. \nOur speaker\, Stephen Smith\, is a certified arborist and the owner of Urban Forest Associates\, a small company based in Leaside. He works with homeowners\, businesses and municipalities to manage individual trees\, forest and natural gardens and to protect trees in construction projects. He has been a member of the Task Force to Bring Back the Don since 1991\, works with the Forest Gene Conservation Association of Ontario\, and is a founder of the Society for Ecological Restoration\, Ontario Chapter.  He is the author of the invasive plant list used in Ontario. He was raised in Toronto\, so he has been watching Toronto trees since he was young.

SUMMARY:Winona Horticultural Society October Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The speaker for our meeting is Alison Ralph.  Alison is relatively new to gardening\, and is going to share with us how she developed a passion for native plants\, and learned about their relationship to pollinators. Refreshments\, handicapped accessible. \nA glorious cap to the month will be our 95th Birthday Party\, on Sunday\, October 27 at 3pm\, at Winona Vine Estates.  To make this the spectacular event we are planning\, we need ALL HANDS ON DECK.  We’re offering to pay half the price of the dinner\, for members\, (so everyone can join in the celebration)\, but expect that in return\, everyone will participate in whatever ways they are able.  We need:  gifts for the “Cheer” and “Plenty”  raffles; people to help set up and decorate the hall; greeters at the door on the day; raffle ticket sellers; and attendants for the games.  (Maybe some other jobs as well\, but you get the idea.)  Dinner tickets must be purchased by October 16\, either at our general meeting\, or by contacting Helene or Krys.  And\, if you haven’t already\, please bring your donations for the raffles to the (Oct. 16) meeting.

SUMMARY:CHS October Meeting: Wild Bees & Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:How do wild bees feed you? Join us for the October Cannington Horticultural Society Meeting and learn about “Wild Bees & Agricultural” with Susan Willis Chan. Susan is a pollination biologist and agroecologist who focuses on the relationship between wild pollinators and crops. She is engaged in field research\, informing government policy on pesticide use\, conservation\, and learning more about the natural history of ground-nesting solitary bees.  Susan has a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Guelph\, a B.Ed. from Western University\, and a B.Sc in Agriculture from McGill University. \nSusan brings her wealth of knowledge to share with us why wild pollinators are important to plant reproduction generally but they are also integral to pollination of the agricultural products that we depend upon for balanced nutrition. This talk will describe that relationship\, discuss some interesting examples of the strong relationship between wild pollinators and crops\, and will outline some of the risks to pollinators of providing this service to us. \nA must-see presentation – bring a friend and join us for a great evening learning about wild bees in Ontario. \nFlower and Culinary Show – all exhibits to be placed by 7pm. Judging to follow. Doors open at 6:30pm for placement of exhibits. \nSignup for November Workshops available.

SUMMARY:November General Meeting: Guest Speaker Jennifer Doubt
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Jennifer Doubt\, “Conquering Moss-trophobia: A Supervised Encounter with Mosses and Some of their Closest Cousins”\nIn the plant world\, mosses are “strong\, sensitive” types. They cover enormous areas\, and are tough enough to grow without soil or roots\, or to survive long droughts and winters (heck\, even glaciation!). They’re also individually tiny\, and delicate enough to signal early warnings of environmental change. In the urban and natural spaces we know and love\, mosses make themselves at home on soil\, wood\, rock and a huge array of human-made stand-ins. They do this whether or not we notice them or invite them. Demystifying mosses can help gardeners with questions such as:\n– How can I tell if something is a moss\, or if it’s a lichen or something else?\n– How do the needs and ways of mosses differ from those of other plants?\n– What main types of moss grow in my plant pots\, yard or region?\n– Are they a problem? \nPlease bring your questions\, and come face-to-face with some of the most fascinating plants on the planet. \nJennifer Doubt\, originally from Deep River\, Ontario\, is a botanist with the Canadian Museum of Nature. Along with the other fun\, dedicated staff\, students and volunteers that make up the Canadian Museum of Nature Botany team\, she cares for a busy\, growing archive of over one million preserved plants and lichens\, and shares the collection far and wide for research and education. Every botanist obsesses more about some plants than others\, and for Jennifer it’s all about the bryophytes\, which she has documented and studied in the wild for over 25 years so far. And still\, there is so much to learn! \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. Instructions are also available by logging into our site and checking the “members-only” version of this event. \nVisitors: Guests are welcome to participate in this virtual and in-person event at a nominal fee of $5.00 Instructions for participation will be emailed to non-society members who complete the registration process prior to the event start time. Please visit the website at https://www.richmondhillgardensociety.org/event-5589173 to register. \nAbout In-Person Attendance at the McConaghy Centre:  \n\nDoors to the auditorium open at 7 pm\nThe meeting begins promptly at 7:30 pm\nPlease bring a mug or cup if you would like hot coffee or tea\nAll attendees are encouraged to register online for inclusion in door prize draws\nMasks are not required\, but are encouraged
