SUMMARY:CHS September Meeting: "HERBS~Creating a Home Garden"
DESCRIPTION:Cannington Horticultural Society welcomes Kate and Phil Collins – proud owners of Foggy River Farm. A small-scale regenerative herb farm and forest garden near Uxbridge\, Ontario. How does one decide what herbs to plant and where? Come out and learn from our guest speakers. \nPhil holds a bachelor of landscape architecture from the University of Guelph and is a fully licensed Landscape Architect. A horticulturalist who has been designing thriving edible ecosystems from small urban backyards to large commercial spaces. Phil is also a seasoned educator teaching all levels from kindergarten through to high school. He has facilitated student-led design of numerous gardens and outdoor spaces. \nKate took the leap from city life to rural back in 2013. And has embraced the world of herbs\, how to grow\, prepare and use various remedies for the home apothecary. Together they practice ecological farming and ethical wildcrafting guided by permaculture\, herbalism and their reverence for the earth. Cultivating over 40 different types of herbs\, including nettles\, red clover\, yarrow\, sage\, lemon balm\, peppermint\, spearmint\, lavender\, thyme\, oregano\, anise hyssop\, chamomile\, catnip and more! \nJoin us as Kate and Phil give you the insight to designing and growing your very own herb gardens – how to design your garden\, where to plant\, what to plant and when to harvest. They are excited to share their wisdom to help you love growing and playing with herbs too. \nAlso featured tonight is the CHS Youth Summer Challenge: “Small Gardens~BIG Changes”. Join us at 7pm for the Youth presentations and awards. Over $400 in prize monies awarded to the top gardeners. \nFlower & Vegetable Show – all CHS Members are welcome to exhibit – please have your exhibits in place by 7pm. Judging to follow. SUMMARY:October General Meeting - Guest Speaker Marion Jarvie
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Marion Jarvie\, “Hellebores – Four Seasons of Beauty”\nHellebores go a long way toward shortening the winters of avid gardeners and providing year-round appeal! Marion will cover all aspects of growing Hellebores in this very thorough and informative talk. This spring beauty will start your gardening year off with flowers as early as February\, and will offer a dramatic framework for your early spring bulbs. Although almost always touted at nurseries as a plant for early spring\, this very long bloomer with gorgeous foliage offers a foil for other plants in summer and fall as well. Hellebores\, with their remarkable range of flower colours and foliage\, are intriguing show stoppers–tough beauties that take on spring frosts and winter chill with aplomb\, and blend readily with almost any garden plant\, especially ones that enjoy some shade. \nMarion Jarvie is a passionate plantswoman who has been gardening in Thornhill for more than forty years. Several weekends annually\, she opens her beautiful garden to the public to showcase plants in spring\, summer and autumn. An enthusiastic educator\, Marion teaches courses on gardening subjects at the Toronto Botanical Garden\, and she has lectured all over North America and the United Kingdom. For more information about Marion\, including the dates that her garden will be open in 2024\, visit www.MarionJarvie.ca. This is Marion’s thirteenth presentation to our society since her first in 1978. \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. Instructions are also available by logging into our site and checking the “members-only” version of this event. \nVisitors: Guests are welcome to participate in this virtual and in-person event at a nominal fee of $5.00 Instructions for participation will be emailed to non-society members who complete the registration process prior to the event start time. Please visit the website at https://www.richmondhillgardensociety.org/event-5589127 to register. \nAbout In-Person Attendance at the McConaghy Centre:  \n\nDoors to the auditorium open at 7 pm\nThe meeting begins promptly at 7:30 pm\nPlease bring a mug or cup if you would like hot coffee or tea\nAll attendees are encouraged to register online for inclusion in door prize draws\nMasks are not required\, but are encouraged\nIn-person attendees will be able to visit Flower Show entries

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Trees
DESCRIPTION:Leaside Garden Society Speaker Series \nHave you ever wondered how the tree canopy we in Leaside are so proud of is being affected by climate change? What the trees will look like in 20 years’ time? October’s talk will answer these questions\, and provide us with some tips about preparing for the inevitable. \nOur speaker\, Stephen Smith\, is a certified arborist and the owner of Urban Forest Associates\, a small company based in Leaside. He works with homeowners\, businesses and municipalities to manage individual trees\, forest and natural gardens and to protect trees in construction projects. He has been a member of the Task Force to Bring Back the Don since 1991\, works with the Forest Gene Conservation Association of Ontario\, and is a founder of the Society for Ecological Restoration\, Ontario Chapter.  He is the author of the invasive plant list used in Ontario. He was raised in Toronto\, so he has been watching Toronto trees since he was young.

SUMMARY:Winona Horticultural Society October Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The speaker for our meeting is Alison Ralph.  Alison is relatively new to gardening\, and is going to share with us how she developed a passion for native plants\, and learned about their relationship to pollinators. Refreshments\, handicapped accessible. \nA glorious cap to the month will be our 95th Birthday Party\, on Sunday\, October 27 at 3pm\, at Winona Vine Estates.  To make this the spectacular event we are planning\, we need ALL HANDS ON DECK.  We’re offering to pay half the price of the dinner\, for members\, (so everyone can join in the celebration)\, but expect that in return\, everyone will participate in whatever ways they are able.  We need:  gifts for the “Cheer” and “Plenty”  raffles; people to help set up and decorate the hall; greeters at the door on the day; raffle ticket sellers; and attendants for the games.  (Maybe some other jobs as well\, but you get the idea.)  Dinner tickets must be purchased by October 16\, either at our general meeting\, or by contacting Helene or Krys.  And\, if you haven’t already\, please bring your donations for the raffles to the (Oct. 16) meeting.
