What are the impacts of your plant choices? By introducing non-native plants to the land in our care\, we are changing biological diversity near and far. Escaped garden plants can cause great harm\, disrupting food webs and ecosystems. As our climate warms\, the problems associated with invasive plants\, pests\, and diseases will increase. Tonight’s speaker invites us to come and learn how we can make better choices in our gardens to safeguard nature.  Get inspired as we explore how we can create beautiful\, environmentally sustainable spaces that meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. \nCathy Kavassalis is a passionate gardener and conservationist. A scientist\, educator\, and inspirational speaker\, Cathy endeavors to stimulate interest and awe in the living world. She is the co-founder of the Coalition for Invasive Plant Regulation\, a member of the Halton Master Gardeners group\, a past president of the Oakville Horticultural Society\, and a former member of the Board of Directors for the Royal Botanical Garden. Cathy is working to remove invasive plants and improve the health of the land in her care in Seguin\, Ontario. This is Cathy’s second presentation to our society. \nAll general meetings begin with a welcome and general announcements\, which precede the introduction of the guest speaker. \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday before the meeting\, and again on Monday. We’re growing even larger with over 45 amazing vendors offering plants of all kinds\, garden decor\, maple\, alpaca\, lavender and honey products\, wooden\, metal and pottery items. Bring the kids along to visit the alpacas and treat them to a glitter “tattoo.” Stop at our food vendor and enjoy a bite to eat alongside the beautiful Saugeen River. DESCRIPTION:The Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society (AFMHS) looks forward to welcoming you into a collection of stunning private gardens located in the beautiful Town of Amherstburg. Each garden is unique but what they all share in common is the creativity\, vision\, hard work\, and very green thumbs of our local gardeners! \nDates: Saturday\, June 8 and Sunday\, June 9\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00am – 4:00pm each day \nLocation: Starting point is Toddy Jones Park Pavilion (50 North St\, Amherstburg) to pick up your Tour Access Pass. Addresses of the gardens will be included in the Tour Access Pass. \nTicket Price: $15 each (cash only) \nThis is a rain or shine event! All proceeds from our 2024 Garden Tour go back into the community through AFMHS programs such as Deck the Town Planters and our community gardens. Come out and enjoy the beautiful scenery\, colourful flowers\, lush greenery and clever designs. Take your time as you stroll the gardens\, refresh your senses\, and collect inspiration. \nHow It Works \nObtaining the Tour Access Pass and List of Garden Addresses: On June 8th or 9th\, visit us at the Toddy Jones Park Pavilion to pick up or purchase your Tour Access Pass. \n\nIf you purchased a ticket in advance\, simply present your ticket at Toddy Jones Park and you will be given your Tour Access Pass.\nIf you did not pre-purchase a Garden Tour ticket\, you can purchase the Tour Access Pass directly on the day of the tour at the Toddy Jones Park Pavilion.\n\nTravelling to the Gardens: You must use your own transportation to get to the gardens. The garden addresses will be listed on your Tour Access Pass in a specific route to save time and distance\, however you can visit them in any order you wish. You can visit all of the gardens in one day or spread them out across both Saturday and Sunday. You will need your Tour Access pass for entry. \nArriving at Each Garden: There will be a front yard sign in each garden. There will be a Garden Tour Marshall there to greet you. \nEnd Your Tour at Open Air for a Chance to Win!  \nWhether you end your tour on Saturday or Sunday\, be sure to fill out the ballot in your Tour Access Pass and bring it to the Clock Tower at the intersection of Richmond St. and Dalhousie St. for your chance to win a $100 gift card to Artisan Grill\, Riccardo’s and other prizes!
