SUMMARY:Combating Invasive Plants:  Tackling the Phragmites in Ontario: On-line presentation by Matt Bolding\, Ecologist and GIS Professional\, Invasive Species Program Coordinator\, Ducks Unlimited Canada (Eastern Region)
DESCRIPTION:Invasive Phragmites australis is an invasive grass that has had a devastating impact on the environment in Ontario and continues to cause a serious impact on both our natural ecosystems and on our human infrastructure. Phragmites management is costly and requires several years of effort\, both in management and monitoring for the potential re-invasion of Phragmites into previously managed areas. A new tool for use in Phragmites management\, biological control\, was approved for release in Canada in 2019 following two decades of research. This presentation will speak to how the biological control agent functions\, and the status of the efforts to integrate biological control into our existing Phragmites management toolkit.\n\nSpeaker profile\n\nMatt Bolding has been involved in wetland research for over a decade\, working across Canada in many different habitats\, including the Prairie Pothole Region\, Rocky Mountains\, and the Great Lakes. He has led numerous research projects in Ontario dealing with invasive species management\, species at risk\, and coastal wetland restoration in the marshes of Long Point and Rondeau\, on Lake Erie. Matt started at Ducks Unlimited Canada in August 2023 and coordinates Ontario’s invasive species program\, which includes supporting research into biological control for invasive Phragmites\,the development of new tools to track aquatic invasive European water chestnut and water soldier and coordinating collaborative Phragmites management in Eastern Ontario for the Ontario Phragmites Action Program.

SUMMARY:Ancaster Horticultural Society
DESCRIPTION:Duane Howitt –  ” Health Benefits of Growing and Consuming Mushrooms” \nDuane Hewitt is a molecular biologist who has had a twenty year career in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. He is currently combining his lab experience with his farming heritage in his new venture\, Forest Fruits Mushrooms. Duane has a Bachelors in Science from McMaster University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Calgary. Duane worked for ten years in the Northeastern United States conducting research in academic and corporate environments. Upon returning to Canada he continued to work in research but eventually shifted to Project Management and Product Development. This led him to the Natural Products realm where he reinforced his belief that food is medicine. Forest Fruits Mushrooms is the result of that journey. Forest Fruits started with gourmet mushrooms for Farmer’s Markets in Dundas\, Hamilton and Burlington but has evolved to producing tinctures from medicinal mushroom

A picturesque look at the beautiful seasonal floral decoration installation created by the Garden Club of Niagara at the historic house. \nFor more than two centuries\, McFarland House has stood as a monument to the impeccable demeanour\, good taste and gracious living that epitomizes Niagara-on-the-Lake. Built at the turn of the 19th century by Scotsman John McFarland\, the home was used as a military hospital during the War of 1812 by both the Americans and the British. Today\, costumed interpreters provide guided tours of this historic home with several special events hosted throughout the year. McFarland House is the oldest property owned by Niagara Parks. \nThe home is nestled in McFarland Park\, open for picnicking\, walking and cycling with public washrooms available at the north end of the park. \n📣 McFarland House Holiday Decorations with Wendy Somers\n🗓️ Thursday\, January 8\, 2026\n⏰ 7:00-9:00pm\n📍 St. John the Evangelist Church hall\, 3428 Portage Road\, Niagara Falls\, ON \n✨ Guest Speaker | Flower Show | Draw & Door Prizes | Refreshments ✨ \nAll are welcome!
