SUMMARY:October CHS Meeting: "FOUR WINDS: Half a Century in the Making"
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for the October Meeting and presentation titled “Four Winds: Half a Century in the Making\,” by Rodger and Grace Inglis. \nGrace often says\, “It is probably true of most gardeners that their interest in plants goes back to childhood\, and often a parent or grandparent.” For Grace\, that inspiration came from her father. The Four Winds property was acquired in 1949 as a weekend escape from the city. Her father\, inspired by the dramatic setting of the 34-acre property\, envisioned a landscape garden. He shared his ideas with the family but passed away before he could act on them. \nGrace\, with an academic background in Fine Arts\, later earned a diploma in Landscape Architecture from the University of Toronto. Rodger recognized the potential of Four Winds for a landscape design project\, and together they began the planning and work\, each contributing their unique experiences and strengths. They rebuilt the house and barn\, added terraces descending the steep hill south of the barn\, and over time\, continued to expand the gardens. They incorporated vegetable and perennial gardens\, and planted many trees—over 900\, in fact! \nJoin us as Rodger and Grace explore and explain the remarkable transformation of Four Winds. This unique presentation offers a lifetime of gardening insights\, ideas\, and a wonderful journey through over a half-century of gardening. \nOctober Flower & Culinary Show – We invite all members to bring in their garden treasurers. Check the October Show & Meeting in the Yearbook (page 32) for complete listing of classes. Questions? Conact Show Chair Angela Hennessey email: angrichennessey@gmail.com \nDoors open at 6:30pm for placement of show entries \nPhotography Buffs  Club competitions are open to all CHS members who do not work as professional photographers. If you didn’t have the chance to enter the June competition\, we encourage you to look at the November print class details on page 33 of the Yearbook and start taking your photos! \nFall Special Registration – table open at 7pm. We are offering a Fall Special – sign up now and receive the rest of the 2025 season membership plus all of the 2026 season for just one price. Regular adults $20. Couple $30 and Youth $3.

SUMMARY:Fusion Gardening® with Sean James
DESCRIPTION:Encouraged by many municipalities and regions\, Fusion Gardening® blends LID (rainwater handling) with xeriscaping (drought-tolerant gardening) and enfolds plantings to enhance biodiversity. One of the main foci of this style is to engage the public with beauty. Since it so important that property owners take up this gauntlet\, Sean James will address the backbone of each of these disciplines\, and discuss how to do each artfully. With climate change\, storms are becoming stronger and less predictable. Droughts are getting longer. Many of us seek to use our gardens to do ‘Good’ for biodiversity. Fusion Gardening™ does all these things by minimizing water use\, keeping the water that falls on our property ON our property\, and\, through the favoring of native and wildlife-supporting plant choices\, this method of gardening supports the life that visits our yards. \nSean owns ‘Sean James Consulting & Design’. Named by Landscape Ontario as 2020 and 2021’s Garden Communicator of the Year\, gardening has been Sean James’ passion and profession for over 40 years.  A graduate of Niagara Parks School of Horticulture\, a Master Gardener\, writer\, and teacher\, Sean focuses on eco-gardening techniques. He has spoken at events from the Maritimes to Seattle and landscaped from Switzerland to California. He had the honor of being part of creating many important reference tools for landscapers\, gardeners and educational institutions. He has chaired the Environmental Stewardship Committee for Landscape Ontario and the Environmental Committee for the Perennial Plant Association and has been featured on radio and television\, including filling in for Paul Zammit occasionally on CBC’s ‘The Gardening Show’.”

SUMMARY:Schomberg Horticultural Society - Daryll Cheng\, "Houseplants\, most important - least understood"
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Cheng is the author of ‘The New Plant Parent’ and ‘The New Plant Collector’ and creator of House Plant Journal. Darryl’s passion for plants and engineering approach to plant care have turned him into one of the most trusted houseplant resources on the internet! What was initially a hobby Tumblr page has turned into an Instagram account with over half a million followers\, a go-to website for anything houseplant related\, his very own houseplant care book\, and plant time-lapse videos that have gone viral around the world. \nMost Important\, Least Understood \nOutdoor gardeners generally have a good sense of their sunlight exposure and indoor grow ops have well documented instructions to follow – but houseplant owners are left with vague\, hand-wavy directions like “bright indirect light” – which leads to dramatically different interpretations and results. In this talk\, Darryl will reveal the secrets to understanding light with a particular focus on how it applies to houseplants – comparing natural light and grow lights. You will finally be able to make sense of light! \n  \nHome \n \nRefreshments\, door prizes. Pumpkin carving competition. \nFree to members\, $ 5.00  non-members at the door \n

SUMMARY:The Native Bees in our Backyards: In-person presentation by Dr. Jessica Forrest\, Associate Professor\, Faculty of Science (Biology Department)\, University of Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Canada is home to approximately 400 species of native bees. Many of these species manage to coexist with us in our cities and farmlands\, visiting flowers and pollinating both crops and wild plants. Yet these native bees often labour in obscurity\, while non-native honey bees receive most of the attention and credit. In this talk\, Dr.Forrest will discuss the life histories and floral requirements of wild bees\, highlighting the diversity of bees that occur—often unnoticed—in urban settings. She will end her talk with some tips on how gardeners and homeowners can become better acquainted with—and support—the native bees and other pollinators in our backyards. \nDr. Jessica Forrest is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Ottawa\, where her lab (https://forrestlab.wordpress.com/) conducts research on the ecology and evolution of wild pollinators\, especially native bees\, and their interactions with plants. Jessica teaches upper-level ecology courses\, in French and English\, and serves as Co-Director of the Biology Department’s graduate program. She is also a subject-matter editor at the journal Ecology. She and her students (and her dog\, Oscar) do field work in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and in the many green spaces—agricultural\, urban\, and natural—around Ottawa.
