SUMMARY:CHS September Meeting: "HERBS~Creating a Home Garden"
DESCRIPTION:Cannington Horticultural Society welcomes Kate and Phil Collins – proud owners of Foggy River Farm. A small-scale regenerative herb farm and forest garden near Uxbridge\, Ontario. How does one decide what herbs to plant and where? Come out and learn from our guest speakers. \nPhil holds a bachelor of landscape architecture from the University of Guelph and is a fully licensed Landscape Architect. A horticulturalist who has been designing thriving edible ecosystems from small urban backyards to large commercial spaces. Phil is also a seasoned educator teaching all levels from kindergarten through to high school. He has facilitated student-led design of numerous gardens and outdoor spaces. \nKate took the leap from city life to rural back in 2013. And has embraced the world of herbs\, how to grow\, prepare and use various remedies for the home apothecary. Together they practice ecological farming and ethical wildcrafting guided by permaculture\, herbalism and their reverence for the earth. Cultivating over 40 different types of herbs\, including nettles\, red clover\, yarrow\, sage\, lemon balm\, peppermint\, spearmint\, lavender\, thyme\, oregano\, anise hyssop\, chamomile\, catnip and more! \nJoin us as Kate and Phil give you the insight to designing and growing your very own herb gardens – how to design your garden\, where to plant\, what to plant and when to harvest. They are excited to share their wisdom to help you love growing and playing with herbs too. \nAlso featured tonight is the CHS Youth Summer Challenge: “Small Gardens~BIG Changes”. Join us at 7pm for the Youth presentations and awards. Over $400 in prize monies awarded to the top gardeners. \nFlower & Vegetable Show – all CHS Members are welcome to exhibit – please have your exhibits in place by 7pm. Judging to follow. New members are encouraged to enter their garden treasurers – have questions? Just email us at: canningtonhorticulturalsociety@gmail.com \nDoors open at 6:30 pm for placement of exhibits \nGuests always welcome!

SUMMARY:CHS October Meeting: Wild Bees & Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:How do wild bees feed you? Join us for the October Cannington Horticultural Society Meeting and learn about “Wild Bees & Agricultural” with Susan Willis Chan. Susan is a pollination biologist and agroecologist who focuses on the relationship between wild pollinators and crops. She is engaged in field research\, informing government policy on pesticide use\, conservation\, and learning more about the natural history of ground-nesting solitary bees.  Susan has a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Guelph\, a B.Ed. from Western University\, and a B.Sc in Agriculture from McGill University. \nSusan brings her wealth of knowledge to share with us why wild pollinators are important to plant reproduction generally but they are also integral to pollination of the agricultural products that we depend upon for balanced nutrition. This talk will describe that relationship\, discuss some interesting examples of the strong relationship between wild pollinators and crops\, and will outline some of the risks to pollinators of providing this service to us. \nA must-see presentation – bring a friend and join us for a great evening learning about wild bees in Ontario. \nFlower and Culinary Show – all exhibits to be placed by 7pm. Judging to follow. Doors open at 6:30pm for placement of exhibits. \nSignup for November Workshops available.

SUMMARY:"Small Trees and Shrubs for Small Spaces" with Cathy Kavassalis
DESCRIPTION:Often called the backbone of a garden\, trees and shrubs give a yard structure and form. They provide benefits of year round beauty\, while improving our environment and providing food and habitat for wildlife. How do you choose the right tree for your space? Native is best for biodiversity\, but fruit bearing trees may be more to your taste. Large trees can be kept small\, but there are many small trees and large shrubs that may be a better fit. The possibilities for small spaces\, while not endless are extensive. Come and get a few ideas for creating your own small oasis. \nOur Last meeting of the year will be online only via Google Meet.  Please email us to receive the link:  eggardeners@gmail.com \nEveryone welcome to join!
