SUMMARY:General Meeting and Speaker
DESCRIPTION:The Huntsville Horticultural Society will hold its first General Meeting of the year on Tuesday\, March 10th at the Huntsville Public Library. SUMMARY:April General Meeting – Guest Speaker Gary Lewis “Hot New Plants"
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Gary Lewis\, “Hot New Plants: Cutting Edge Garden Plants for Cutting Edge Gardens”\nPhoenix Perennials is reputed to be among the first nurseries in Canada – and even the world – to offer new cultivars developed by the best international breeders. Nursery owner\, Gary Lewis\, will give us the inside track on recent new cutting edge garden plants and talk about where plant breeding is heading in the future. If you love new plants\, you won’t want to miss this talk! \nGary Lewis has had a lifelong passion for plants. While completing a Masters of Science degree in Botany\, Gary became the owner of Phoenix Perennials on his 28th birthday. Since then\, he has greatly expanded the business into a dynamic\, award-winning\, destination nursery for Western Canada. In 2013 Phoenix Perennials launched Canadian mail order to bring their unique plant selection to a broader audience and now ships more than 2\,500 plants a year to avid gardeners from coast to coast to coast. Commendations include earning the title\, “Communicator of the Year” in 2013 by the BC Landscape and Nursery Association.\nGary is a regular speaker at garden clubs and has appeared many times on radio and television. In addition to writing articles for gardening magazines such as Fine Gardening\, he authored the award winning\, “The Complete Book of Ground Covers\,” published in 2022.   \nMembers: Instructions for participation in this virtual and in-person event will be emailed to members twice – once on the Friday prior to the meeting\, and again on Monday. SUMMARY:Pollinators and the Plants They Favour
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation: Pollinators and the Plants They Favour \nMonday\, April 20 at 7:00 PM (Zoom) \nPollinators play an essential role in healthy ecosystems and in our food supply. Bumble bees\, solitary bees\, flies\, butterflies\, and moths are among the most familiar pollinators\, and in Canada more than one‑third of our food crops depend on bees alone. Fruits such as cherries\, peaches\, and plums; vegetables like cucumbers\, melons\, and squash; and oilseeds including canola and sunflower all rely on pollination. \nIn recent years\, pollinator populations have declined sharply due to climate change\, habitat loss (including the loss of native plants)\, and pesticide overexposure. These declines threaten plant diversity\, ecosystem stability\, and long‑term food security. \nOur presentation will explore: \n\nPollination\nPollen and nectar\nPollinators\nPlants\nSpecies at risk\nQ & A\n\nIf you would like to attend\, please let me know (gardenhespeler@gmail.com) and I will send you the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:CHS April Meeting: Mushrooms~Wild & Wonderful
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a interesting evening on the topic of ‘Mushrooms – Wild & Wonderful’ with Julia Tchervova and John Caswell. Mushrooms are far more than just food. They are ecological engineers\, chemical innovators\, and one of the most misunderstood kingdoms of life. Let’s explore their hidden world together. John and Julia would like to share not only the art and science of mushroom foraging\, but also the fascinating world of fungi — organisms that form vast “wood wide web” networks\, support plant and animal life\, produce powerful medicines\, and even help restore damaged environments.\n\n\nJulia’s journey into the world of mushrooms began when she was six years old\, walking through the forests with her grandfather\, who was an avid forager. What started as childhood curiosity grew into a lifelong passion for fungi — from identifying wild edible species to understanding the incredible underground networks that connect entire ecosystems.\n\nWhen Julia met John\, he expressed an interest in wild mushrooms. Julia began mentoring him\, and he took the initiative getting a guidebook\, venturing into the woods\, and learning to confidently identify his findings. They both have a deep passion for the woods\, and there’s nothing better than exploring the forest and discovering wild edible and medicinal mushrooms.\nSince 2018\, they started collecting mushrooms for sale and selling at numerous farmer’s markets. For 5 years now they lead practical classes – wild mushrooms foray\, where they share their knowledge with their students on how to identify mushrooms\, how to search for them\, introducing the students to the unseeing world of fungi that is right under our feet.\nBring your questions and learn more about the wonderful world of fungi!\n\n\nAlso this evening starts the flower show season. All members are invited to bring in their garden treasures to wow the judge for the April Flower Show! All entries to be in place by 7pm for the start of judging.Doors open at 6:30pm.
