The Fascinating Biology of Orchids

February 5, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

How has the family, Orchidaceae, become the most successful and largest family of flowering plants?  Dr. Larry Peterson, University of Guelph Professor Emeritus, will discuss features of orchid biology that have led to a family that includes over 25,000 species.  Topics include pollination mechanisms, associations with beneficial fungi, adaptations to a wide range of terrestrial habitats, and how numerous orchid species have taken to the trees as epiphytes.

Dr. Peterson has published over 200 papers in referred journals.  His current book is “When is a ‘Flower’ not a Flower and other Intriguing Questions about Plants”.

Our meetings always include decaf coffee, some sweets and a warm, inclusive, sharing environment.  Guests are welcome.  We do encourage people to bring their own mug.  We are also running a photo contest in February and our Raffle and Bring & Buy tables will be open.  Doors open at 7:00PM.
