Fergus & District – May Members’ Meeting

May 19, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Guest Speaker: Robert Pavlis

Tackling Shade

What do you do in a shady spot?  What about a dry shady spot under maples?  What will grow under walnut trees?  This presentation provides ideas for shade gardening, while presenting some lesser-known shade plants.

Robert Pavlis lives in southern Ontario, in hardiness zone 5. He has been gardening for more than 30 years (he stopped counting at 30). He is a Master Gardener and speaks about gardening at many local gardening events and horticultural meetings. He contributes the ‘Plant of the Month’ articles for the Ontario Rock Garden & Hardy Plant Society, writes articles for some local newspapers, and teaches a 6-week Gardening Fundamentals course at The Arboretum, University of Guelph.

A few years ago, Robert bought 5 acres of land and has been developing a large private garden called Aspen Grove Gardens. He now has about 3,000 perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees. He describes himself as a ‘Plantaholic’!

Robert is, perhaps, most widely known for his blog Garden Myths, which is dedicated to unearthing the truth about gardening, looking at common and not-so-common myths and debunking them. The blog goes one step further and explains the science around ‘the truth’.  That said, the blog is written for the general public with no science background.

Robert is also the author of three books: Garden Myths, Soil Science for Gardeners, and Building Natural Ponds.
