Jan 12, 2021 Dirk Plaggemeier, (City of Brampton, Community Services) Bugs of Brampton
Dirk’s bio: I have a diploma in electronics and spent 25 years in the automotive industry, when the family business closed I switched careers completely and started in lawn care. In 2008 I started at the City of Brampton as the Integrated Pest Management Specialist or IPM Specialist, a fancy term for ‘how do I get rid of the bugs that are eating my plants?’. My day to day work deals with Invasive plants like giant Hogweed, dangerous plants like Poison Ivy and all the bug calls the city receives. With climate change, insect damage is getting worse and I am responsible to limit that damage. I assist all the different groups in the parks department when they need help growing or keeping alive anything from trees to grass. I am not an entomologist but I am known as the City’s “Bug Guy”
